New Publications from PHC4
The Cardiac Procedures Report examines the performance of Pennsylvania acute care hospitals, hospital outpatient departments, and ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) for several different types of cardiac procedures performed from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2024. This year’s report adds several new procedures, and implements an interactive display of volume, visualizing the data, and supporting stakeholders by enabling ease of access to the total number of cases performed in inpatient and outpatient settings. The procedures include cardiac ablation, cardioversion, coronary artery bypass graft, defibrillator implantation, left atrial appendage closure, mitral valve procedure, pacemaker implantation, percutaneous coronary intervention, surgical aortic valve replacement, transcatheter aortic valve replacement, and tricuspid valve procedure. Hospital ratings are reported for in-hospital mortality, 7-day, 30-day, and 90-day readmission, and extended postoperative length of stay. Hospital charges are also included in the report.
Financial Analysis 2025 – Volume One report is the first of a three-part series of facility-specific financial reports published annually by PHC4. This volume includes statewide and hospital-specific information about the financial health of Pennsylvania’s general acute care hospitals during fiscal year 2025 (FY25). The report shows that in FY25, 26% of Pennsylvania hospitals posted a negative total margin and 11% posted a total margin between 0% and 4%.
Financial Analysis 2025 – Rural Hospitals report displays information specific to general acute care hospitals located in Pennsylvania rural counties during fiscal year 2025 (FY25). This is a supplementary report to PHC4’s Financial Analysis report series focused on the financial health of rural county hospitals. In FY25, of the 63 hospitals located in Pennsylvania’s rural counties, 17 (27%) reported operating losses based on their operating margins. Additionally, the report showed that uncompensated care (including bad debt and charity care) for rural hospitals increased 9.1%, rising from $176 million in FY24 to $192 million in FY25.
County-Level Health Care Reports

County-Level Utilization Reports
PHC4’s County-Level Utilization Reports, which show the overall total number of inpatient hospitalizations and ambulatory/outpatient cases, have been updated with fourth quarter 2025 data. These reports display county-specific volume of cases for Pennsylvania residents by patient age, sex, and payer.
County-Level Condition Specific Reports
PHC4’s County-Level Condition Specific Reports have been updated with new data covering the period January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2025. These timely reports focus on several high interest conditions and display county-specific rates of hospitalization for Pennsylvania residents who were treated in Pennsylvania general acute care hospitals.

For more than 26 years, Jane’s expertise, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence have helped shape PHC4’s research and reporting efforts. Throughout her tenure in the Health Policy Research Department, and most recently as Director and then Chief since 2021, she has made lasting contributions to our organization and the communities we serve. While we will greatly miss her presence, we are excited for her as she embarks on this new chapter. PHC4 Summer Intern
For the second consecutive summer, PHC4 had the opportunity to host an intern! Deborah Tachiri joined PHC4 from Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy where she is pursuing a Master’s degree in Public Policy and Management. Her work contributed to the efforts of PHC4’s Public Affairs Department and supported the goal of expanding public awareness set by PHC4’s Council in the 2024 – 2029 Strategic Plan.
